Hi Guys, just listened to this episode with great interest and enjoyment. I’ve always got Applecare for every desktop I’ve owned since my first mac, a Bondi Blue iMac, and have had cause three times to be very glad I did.

Hey guys – GREAT show. I would have enjoyed all the “how have you damaged your mac” conversation – I could have spoken of all the different liquids with which I’ve destroyed macs and then made my grand finale the great magnet incident of 2008.
But here’s a story that may answer the question about liquid damage stopping AppleCare. Lindsay dumped a cup of coffee in her MacBook soon after she got it, but unbelievably nothing went wrong with it. 2 years later the fan started making funny noises, so I sent it in to be repaired. Apple wrote back and said,
“The repair of your MacBook has been placed on hold at the Apple repair center. The repair is pending your approval of the following quote for repair costs: $755 plus tax). This amount is based on identified damages related to liquid damage. The LCD has been affected.” And included this picture below:

Note that there was NO effect on the functionality of the display, but they refused (when I called them to argue) to fix just the fan and leave the display be. They said that they are required to return all machines in pristine condition or not fix anything at all.
Needless to say I was furious. My friend Pat told me that she uses a separate policy through State Farm, and like David’s plan it covers damage by you and being run over by a car – everything. She has even exercised the policy twice and it worked. I called my agent (also State Farm) and he was able to confirm I could get it too. The only problem was I’d just paid for AppleCare. So in the future I’ll forgo Applecare altogether. or if I must, I’ll wait 11 months as David recommends.

When Laptop gets wet with sticky stuff
1. remove power
2. rinse with distilled water
3. put entire laptop into rice or silica gel cat litter for a couple days
my dad did this for me many years ago when I spilled coke into my computer.
