Mac Roundtable 2009.04.10 Episode #61

Katie Floyd: The MacCore Twitter
Steve Stanger: The Mac Attack Twitter
Tim Verpoorten: Mac Reviewcast Twitter

Another small but mighty group this week. We discussed the proliferation of hard drives and why that’s not necessarily always a good thing, storage solutions and backup strategies. We also talked about how the iPhone and iPod Touch have become much more than simple phones and iPods and how a variety of applications make them excellent travel companions and perhaps even computer replacements. Of course, the discussion somehow also turned to Twitter clients and our picks.

Storage Solutions and Backup:
Mozy Online Backup
Time Capsule
Voyager Dock
Drobo
SuperDuper

iPhone/iPod Touch Apps:
Evernote
Night Stand
White Noise (Light)
Flight Tracker
WiFiTrack

Twitter Clients:
TweetDeck
Nambu
Tweetie

Other Cool Stuff Mentioned:
Matias Folding Keyboard
WWDC
MailPlane

  1. Katie, I thought you had a first gen MacBook (Core Duo, not Core 2 Duo)?

  2. Ted-
I started out with the original MacBook 2Ghz Core Duo. Then, about a year ago, I had the opportunity to buy a family member’s nearly new MacBook Core 2 Duo for a great price when they wanted to upgrade to a 15″ screen. So I took the mini-upgrade for the 802.11n compatibility and Core 2 Duo and sold my original MacBook.

Sometimes it’s easy for me to forget that it’s not the original MacBook I bought. 🙂 I’m about due for another upgrade, but keep holding out thinking that we’re going to see some more interesting things in the next 6 months or so. Trying to decide whether I want to stick with a notebook only solution or go with a more powerful desktop machine and a notebook for travel.

  3. Oh, that explains it! 🙂 Good deal!

I still have my 1st Gen MB. I was ready to purchase the new aluminum model, until I looked at. Can’t stand the inferior screen, and I have to have FireWire…. and it just costs too darned much for what it is. I may just purchase the updated white model when or if this one dies. My AppleCare will expire in less than two months on this one.

My main machine is a Mac Pro, so my laptop requirements aren’t that extreme. Actually, this 1st gen model does everything I need to do. But, I can understand that it can be tough decision.

    Take care!
