It makes sense for Apple to kill the currently existing Siri service. First of all, they own it now, they can do whatever the he-double hockey sticks they want. But more to the point, they have vastly improved what Siri can do, in that it does a LOT more natural language parsing than the current Siri does (and it sounds like they’ll be extending this even further in the months to come). Unfortunately that type of processing power doesn’t come cheap, which is why they needed the iPhone 4s and its A5 dual-core processor. But now we have “new Siri” and “old Siri”, and as any coder worth his or her salt knows, maintaining two separate code bases is annoying at best, and potentially disastrous at worst. Apple is being cautious here and not wanting to over extend itself, and I think that’s the right decision.

I am bothered about the iPhone 3s “free with 2 year contract” discussion. Everyone I know is on a cell phone contract and I would bet that all participants on today’s podcast are also on a contract of some sort. To state that there is a certain price for the use of a cell phone is “Duh”, of course there’s a price. Therefore only if you are a brand new to the cell phone market will you have an additional bill to pay. (Or if you are new to the smart phone market you do have the required minimum data plan increase, which is standard on all smart phones.)
Awaiting the next roundtable in my feed. I stay subscribed.

The problem with the MessagePad handwriting analogy is that Apple never fixed it. Well, they tried, and it got a little better, but it was still largely plagued with issues.
Now, assuming that the iCloud launch hiccups (which is entirely possible, it’s happened to even the big guys [Google, Amazon, etc.]), AND if they refuse to fix it, or only halfheartedly fix it, or take forever to fix it, then yeah, it probably will leave a bad taste in consumers’ mouths. BUT if they fix it up quickly, or if it was just the usual launch jitters and they clear up soon, then yeah, there will be a few who bitch and moan, but they will largely be swept away by the tide of new iPhone 4S owners.
And my vote for iCloud failure headlines? “iCloudy with a Chance of Failure”
