Apple has alot of potential with the direction that they’re going in both the universal binary idea and in the idea behind parallels.
I’m not sure if there are technical problems with this but I see Apple very close to having the perfectly nimble system. If IBM comes out with a very fast PPC chip they can use it, if Intel keeps the portable processor advantage they can use it, if AMD holds the high power chips Apple can use them, if the Cell processor delivers on the promises we heard a few months ago Apple can use it.
In the virtualization realm, Apple has the best OS but if you need or want a windows program you can run it on the mac with very little trade-off. The potential I see is in that they could be close to having a system that, of course, runs Mac software but potentially could run Windows programs without Windows a la WINE/Crossover Office. That, of course, needs to be perfected but if they do, watch out! We can already run linux program on OSX if you have the tenacity to geek your way thru it. Apple could easily make using Linux software run easily on OSX if they saw it as sufficiently profitable.
With a system that can run on whichever processor is fastest for the particular platform and can run basically every piece of software out there no one could stop them!
Unless Google does.

Some thoughts on .mac’s usefulness and value from one perspective:
As a professional artist I use .mac to host my website,www.johnwalkerillustration.com and a related, password protected, ftp site for client file transfer. The ftp site has been a lifesaver on a couple of occasions and the monthly fee for webhosting alone is very competitive.
I also use .mac to create websites on the fly to display new projects, experiment, etc. (I use Rapidweaver for site building which works great with .mac), not to mention personal sites with family photos and downloads. I love the fact that I can have a site up and running in a matter of minutes and then just as easily take it down when I wish to. Four sites this month, two the next and the fee is the same. This type of service may be available elsewhere, I don’t know, but I do know the whole process is so much easier -mac like- than other options I’ve explored.
I also host a couple of groups since that feature has been added, one a professional illustrators group and another for friends.There were a lot of growing pains with the new group feature at first but they seem to have been straightened out and my pc friends can join in too.
Backup is a great easy to use program and sync, even with a few glitches lately, has for the most part worked well too.
Now none of these services on their own including Sync, Backup, extra Gargeband loops, etc. may be worth the subscription price but the bottom line-if you use the services and features .mac is a great deal.

You mentioned that you can add discounted subs to your .mac account before renewall. I purchased one when I got a new Macbook Pro 17 inch – but I cannot find anywhere in the account info to add anything other than disk space etc..?? Can you help.
